Panamint City

Outlaw Town at Canyon's End

State: California County: Inyo County Founded: 1873 Abandoned: 1877 Peak Population: 2,000

Panamint City was a notorious silver mining town, reportedly founded by outlaws who needed a remote hideout. The town grew to 2,000 residents with a main street of saloons and businesses. In 1876, a massive flash flood swept through Surprise Canyon, destroying half the town. What the flood didn't take, economics finished.

Outlaw Beginnings

Legend says Panamint was founded by road agents who needed a place to spend their ill-gotten gains. The remote location at canyon's end made it perfect for those avoiding the law.

Flash Flood

In July 1876, a cloudburst sent a wall of water through Surprise Canyon. Buildings, equipment, and even the safe from a saloon were swept away.
