Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in North America, founded in 1607. It served as Virginia's capital for 92 years. When the capital moved to Williamsburg in 1699, Jamestown declined and was eventually abandoned. Archaeological digs continue to reveal its secrets.
First Settlement
104 colonists arrived in May 1607. Most died within the first year from disease, starvation, and conflict with Powhatan tribes.
Capital Movement
When the statehouse burned for the fourth time in 1698, the capital was moved to Williamsburg. Jamestown faded away.
