Proctor was headquarters for the Little River Lumber Company's Hazel Creek operation. For decades, loggers harvested the virgin Smoky Mountain forests. The company sold the land to the park, and Proctor's residents relocated. Only foundations and cemeteries remain.
Lumber Era
Little River Lumber built railroads deep into the Smokies. Proctor was the base for logging the Hazel Creek watershed.
Park Takes Over
When the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was created, residents had to leave. The forest is now reclaiming the town.
