Railroad and Logger Town

Whitney served the narrow-gauge Sumpter Valley Railroad and nearby logging operations. When the timber was cut and the railroad closed, Whitney followed. A few buildings remain along the old railroad grade.

Railroad Town

The Sumpter Valley Railroad connected gold and timber towns of eastern Oregon. Whitney was a stop along the line.

Timber End

When the accessible timber was harvested, logging moved elsewhere. The railroad closed in 1947.
