State: North Carolina County: Carteret County Founded: 1753 Abandoned: 1971 (last resident left) Peak Population: 700

Portsmouth was once the largest settlement on the Outer Banks, used for 'lightering' (transferring cargo) from ocean ships to smaller boats. The opening of Hatteras Inlet and the railroad destroyed its economy. The last two residents left in 1971.
