Shakespeare started as a Butterfield Stage stop (Mexican Springs). It was renamed four times as fortunes changed. Billy the Kid allegedly washed dishes here. In 1881, cattle rustlers 'Russian Bill' and Sandy King were lynched. The privately-owned town is preserved with guided tours.
