Mogollon
End of the Road Treasure
State: New Mexico
County: Catron County
Founded: 1879
Abandoned: 1940s (as mining town)
Peak Population: 2,000
Mogollon sits at the end of a winding mountain road, one of the most remote towns in New Mexico. At its peak, 2,000 people mined gold and silver here. Today, a few artists and holdouts occupy original buildings in what may be New Mexico's best-preserved ghost town.
Mountain Mining
Mogollon's remoteness was overcome by the richness of its ore. Pack mules carried supplies up and gold down.
Artist Colony
A handful of artists now live in Mogollon, drawn by isolation and preserved buildings.
