Allaire Village

State: New Jersey County: Monmouth County Founded: 1822 Abandoned: 1846 Peak Population: 500

Allaire Village was a self-sufficient ironworks community of 500 people—with bakery, school, church, and housing. James P. Allaire's bog iron furnished his NYC steamship engine foundry. When Pennsylvania coal made bog iron obsolete in 1846, the 'Deserted Village' was abandoned. Now a living history museum.
