Allaire
Bog Iron Works
State: New Jersey
County: Monmouth County
Founded: 1822
Abandoned: 1846
Peak Population: 500
Allaire was built around the Howell Iron Works, which smelted bog iron ore. James Allaire bought it in 1822 and built a model company town. When Pennsylvania anthracite coal made bog iron obsolete, the town collapsed. It's now a living history village.
Bog Iron
Bog iron is found in swampy areas of the Pine Barrens. It was smelted using local charcoal until coal became cheaper.
Living History
Allaire Village is now a living history site with costumed interpreters. A steam train runs through the park.
