Southern Cross was a gold mining town at 7,000 feet in the Anaconda Range. At its peak, 2,000 people endured harsh winters to extract gold. When mining declined, most left. A few residents remain for summer months.
High Altitude Mining
Despite brutal winters in the mountains, miners built a substantial town. Multiple saloons, hotels, and stores served the population.
Summer Only
Today, a handful of cabins see summer use. The harsh climate makes year-round living impractical.
