Cyanide Gold

State: Montana County: Fergus County Founded: 1900 Abandoned: 1921 Peak Population: 1,500

Kendall used the new cyanide process to extract gold from low-grade ore. The technology made mining profitable, and the town boomed. When the ore was exhausted, the technology couldn't save it. Stone buildings and the mill foundation remain.

New Technology

Cyanide leaching extracted gold from ore too poor for traditional methods. Kendall was an early adopter.

Stone Heritage

Builders used local stone, leaving substantial ruins. The mill foundation and commercial buildings are photogenic.
