Coloma
Mining Camp in the Wilderness
State: Montana
County: Missoula County
Founded: 1890
Abandoned: 1920s
Peak Population: 300
Coloma was a gold and silver mining camp deep in Montana's mountains. At its peak, the town had hotels, saloons, and a post office. When the mines closed, residents left and the forest reclaimed the town. Today, reaching Coloma requires a multi-mile hike.
Remote Riches
Coloma's isolation was both blessing and curse. The remote location made transportation expensive, but also meant less competition for claims.
Back to Nature
After abandonment, the wooden buildings collapsed and the forest grew back. Only foundations and mining debris remain.
