The Ghost Structures

State: Kentucky County: McCreary County Founded: 1937 Abandoned: 1962 Peak Population: Company town

Blue Heron (or Mine 18) was a coal camp isolated in the Big South Fork gorge. When the mine closed, the town was abandoned. The NPS has recreated the town using metal 'ghost structures' — outlines of the original buildings — alongside audio exhibits.
