Rising Sun

River Glory Faded

State: Indiana County: Ohio County Founded: 1814 Abandoned: N/A Peak Population: 2,500

Rising Sun was a prosperous Ohio River town in the 1800s. When railroads replaced river traffic, the economy stagnated. The preserved downtown retains its 19th-century character, while a casino has brought some life back.

River Era

Rising Sun prospered on Ohio River commerce. Steamboats stopped here, and the town had foundries and mills.

Stagnation as Preservation

Because the economy stagnated, buildings weren't torn down for progress. The result is an intact 19th-century downtown.
