Old Shawneetown was a major financial center and gateway to the Illinois Territory. Legend says it once refused a loan to the village of Chicago. The disastrous 1937 Ohio River flood submerged the town, forcing a move to higher ground. The magnificent Greek Revival bank building still stands tall among the ruins.
