Sunbury

The Lost Seaport

State: Georgia County: Liberty County Founded: 1758 Abandoned: 1864 (burned by Sherman) Peak Population: 1,000

Sunbury was once a deepwater port rivaling Savannah. It declined due to malaria and the rise of Savannah. The final blow came during the Civil War when Union troops burned the dwindling town. The Sunbury Cemetery and Fort Morris are all that remain.
