Scull Shoals was an early center of Georgia industry. It had the state's first paper mill and one of its first cotton factories. The town thrived until the Civil War devastated the region. Today, ruins of the mill and bridges can be explored in the Oconee National Forest.
Industrial Pioneer
In the early 1800s, Scull Shoals harnessed the Oconee River for water power. The town produced paper, cotton textiles, and flour.
Civil War and After
The Civil War ended Scull Shoals' prosperity. Sherman's March passed nearby, and the economy never recovered. Residents gradually left.
