Before California, there was Auraria. Georgia's gold rush began in 1828, and Auraria was its center. When news of California gold arrived in 1849, miners left en masse - some founding another Auraria that became Denver. The original quietly faded.

America's First Gold Rush

Gold was discovered in Georgia in 1828, predating California by 20 years. Auraria became a boomtown of miners, merchants, and mayhem.

California Calls

When California gold was discovered, Georgia miners rushed west. Many who left Auraria founded another Auraria in Colorado, now part of Denver.
