Andersonville (Camp Sumter) was a Confederate POW camp where 45,000 Union soldiers were held. Nearly 13,000 died from disease, exposure, and starvation. Commandant Henry Wirz was executed for war crimes. The site is now a National Historic Site with a national cemetery.
