State: Florida County: Miami-Dade County Founded: 1930s Abandoned: 1992 Peak Population: 100

Stiltsville was a collection of wood-frame houses built on stilts in the shallow waters of Biscayne Bay. At its peak, 27 colorful structures housed gambling clubs, parties, and private retreats. Hurricane Andrew destroyed most in 1992. Seven remain as protected historic structures.

Prohibition Era

Stiltsville began during Prohibition when being offshore meant avoiding liquor laws. The community grew to include clubs and private homes.

Hurricane Andrew

The Category 5 hurricane in 1992 destroyed most structures. The seven survivors are now protected by the Stiltsville Trust.
