Port Boca Grande was a major phosphate shipping terminal. Trains brought phosphate from central Florida mines to deep-water docks on Gasparilla Island. When phosphate shipping shifted elsewhere, the port closed. The ruins of the docks and buildings remain in the state park.

Florida's phosphate mines fed the world's fertilizer industry. Port Boca Grande was a key shipping point.

State Park

The island's southern tip is now a state park. Ruins of the phosphate operation are visible.
