Johnsonville was a twine factory village that thrived in the 1800s. In 1965, eccentric businessman Raymond Schmitt bought the entire village. He added relocated historic buildings, creating a museum-town. After his death, it changed hands several times and remains privately owned.

The Johnson Twine Company made rope and twine for 100 years. The factory employed most of the village.
