Johnsonville was a twine factory village that thrived in the 1800s. In 1965, eccentric businessman Raymond Schmitt bought the entire village. He added relocated historic buildings, creating a museum-town. After his death, it changed hands several times and remains privately owned.
Twine Factory
The Johnson Twine Company made rope and twine for 100 years. The factory employed most of the village.
Eccentric Collector
Raymond Schmitt collected historic buildings the way others collect stamps. He moved structures from across New England to Johnsonville.
