Zinc was named for its primary industry - extracting zinc ore from the Ozark Mountains. The town had stores, a school, and churches serving miners and their families. When zinc prices crashed, the mines closed and residents left. A handful of buildings and a few residents remain.

Mining Era

The zinc deposits around Zinc, Arkansas were discovered in the 1880s. Mining operations brought workers and businesses to the remote hills.

Decline

Zinc prices fluctuated throughout the 20th century. When prices dropped for good, the mines closed and most residents left for cities.
